Chapter 4 — What Emma Heard
Three days earlier, Emma had stayed late at school for art club.
Vanessa volunteered there twice a week.
Emma finished early and went looking for her mother.
She heard voices inside an empty classroom.
Vanessa.
Linda Coleman.
And a man.
Emma didn’t recognize him at first.
Then he stepped into the hallway.
It was Vice Principal Mark Dalton.
Emma hid behind a display board.
Dalton was angry.
“Give me the records,” he told Linda.
Linda refused.
“The district needs to see them.”
Dalton lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what you’re accusing people of.”
Vanessa stepped between them.
“She has the transaction numbers.”
Dalton stared at Vanessa.
“Stay out of this.”
Then he walked away.
Emma thought the argument was over.
It wasn’t.
Linda handed Vanessa the blue backpack.
“If he gets into my office, these need to be somewhere else.”
Vanessa brought the bag home.
Emma saw her hiding it in the pantry.
“Why did you tell Emma not to tell me?” Ryan asked.
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Linda was scared.”
“Of me?”
“No. Of anybody knowing where the records were.”
Ryan shook his head.
“That’s still not explaining what happened today.”
Emma looked toward the grocery bag.
“I was taking food to Liam.”
Ryan frowned.
“Who’s Liam?”
“A boy in my class.”
His family had stopped receiving grocery cards from the school assistance program weeks earlier.
So had several other families.
Emma had begun secretly bringing him parts of her own lunch.
Today she tried taking enough food for Liam and his younger sister.
Vanessa caught her.
But what frightened Vanessa wasn’t the missing groceries.
It was what Emma said next.
“I told Mom Liam said Mr. Dalton took his card away.”
