Chapter 7 — Another Recording
The school board investigation began that afternoon.
Richard insisted he had never explicitly told Evan to destroy anything.
Evan insisted his father’s meaning had been obvious.
There was no recording of their conversation.
At least, nobody thought there was.
Then Tyler remembered something.
Two nights earlier, his father had discussed the science fair while driving both boys home from soccer practice.
Richard’s company vehicle contained a dashboard camera.
It recorded audio inside the car for insurance purposes.
Richard’s expression changed when Tyler mentioned it.
“That camera doesn’t save everything.”
Investigators requested the recording anyway.
The company initially claimed the file had been overwritten.
But a cloud backup still existed.
The audio was clear.
Richard’s voice:
“Noah Bennett’s bridge is going to make Tyler look ridiculous.”
Evan responded:
“What do you want me to do about it?”
Richard laughed.
“I don’t care. You’re smart. Science labs are full of accidents.”
Then came the sentence that ended every argument about what Richard meant.
“Just make sure there’s nothing left to test Friday morning.”
Tyler stopped listening.
He walked out of the room.
His father had not merely made a joke.
He had told Evan exactly what result he wanted.
