Chapter 5 — Richard Grant Arrives
Richard Grant arrived at school less than an hour later.
He walked into the principal’s office wearing a navy suit and an annoyed expression.
“Why was my son pulled from class?”
Principal Reynolds placed the tablet on the desk.
“Because we have video of Evan destroying another student’s science project.”
Richard looked at Evan.
His expression barely changed.
“Why would you do something that stupid?”
Evan looked down.
Tyler sat beside him.
Noah and his mother, Jennifer, sat across the room.
Ms. Carter stood near the door.
Principal Reynolds continued.
“Evan says you made comments suggesting Noah’s project should have an accident.”
Richard laughed.
“That’s absurd.”
“Did you say it?”
“I might have made a joke.”
Jennifer frowned.
“Your joke ended with my son’s work smashed on the floor.”
Richard looked at her.
“And I’ll happily pay for the materials.”
Noah’s eyes filled with anger.
“It took me three weeks.”
Richard barely looked at him.
“Then build another one.”
Ms. Carter stepped forward.
“That’s enough.”
Richard turned toward her.
“I sponsor this science program.”
Principal Reynolds’s expression hardened.
“That does not give you authority over it.”
Richard leaned back.
“Then let’s not turn a stupid mistake into a scandal.”
Tyler stared at his father.
For the first time, Noah realized Tyler wasn’t proud.
He looked ashamed.
Then Ms. Carter placed another document on the table.
“There may already be a scandal.”
Richard stopped smiling.
