Chapter 3 — Evan Grant
Evan Grant was Tyler’s older brother.
He was in eighth grade.
Tyler was only in sixth.
Both boys attended the same school.
Ms. Carter replayed the moment.
The face was unmistakable.
Evan.
Noah stared at Tyler.
“Why was your brother in here?”
Tyler looked genuinely frightened now.
“I don’t know.”
Ms. Carter folded her arms.
“Tyler, I need the truth.”
He looked toward the hallway.
“He told me not to say anything.”
Noah’s expression changed.
“You knew?”
“Not about this.”
“Then what?”
Tyler looked down.
“He asked me yesterday which project was yours.”
Ms. Carter stared at him.
“Why?”
“He said he wanted to see it.”
“And you believed him?”
Tyler didn’t answer.
Noah pointed toward the muddy shoe.
“Then why do you have mud from the bridge?”
Tyler looked at his sneaker.
“Because I came in before class.”
“You said you didn’t.”
Tyler’s face reddened.
“I lied about that.”
Ms. Carter frowned.
“Why?”
“I saw the bridge broken.”
Tyler swallowed.
“I stepped on one of the pieces by accident.”
He pointed toward the mud.
“I thought everyone would blame me.”
Noah stared at him.
“So you just pretended to be surprised?”
Tyler nodded.
“I didn’t smash it.”
That part, at least, appeared true.
But another question remained.
Why would Evan destroy Noah’s project?
Ms. Carter contacted the principal.
Evan was pulled from class.
When he entered the laboratory and saw the tablet on the desk, he stopped.
He knew immediately.
“You recorded it.”
Ms. Carter stared at him.
“Why did you do it?”
Evan looked at Noah.
Then toward Tyler.
“Because that bridge wasn’t supposed to win.”
