Noah Kept Saying Someone Had Been Inside His Room — Then Ethan Played the Security Recording and Rachel Recognized Him

Chapter 5 — Lucas Comes Back

Ethan wanted to call police immediately.

Rachel asked him to wait long enough to call Lucas first.

He answered on the second ring.

Rachel’s voice shook.

“You were inside my house.”

Silence.

Then Lucas said:

“So the camera caught me.”

“You frightened Noah.”

Lucas immediately sounded different.

“I didn’t know he was coming home.”

“That doesn’t make it okay.”

“I know.”

Ethan took the phone.

“Where are you?”

Lucas hesitated.

“At a motel near Highway Nine.”

“Bring the tape back.”

“No.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You entered my son’s room without permission.”

Lucas answered quietly:

“And I found proof my father tried to tell the truth before he died.”

Rachel grabbed the phone.

“What’s on the tape?”

Lucas didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Come hear it yourself.”

An hour later, Ethan and Rachel met Lucas in the motel lobby.

Ethan recognized him immediately from the camera.

Older now.

Gray in his beard.

Same silver bracelet.

Lucas placed a small cassette recorder on the table.

“I didn’t start that fire.”

Rachel said nothing.

Lucas pressed play.

Samuel Bennett’s voice filled the room.

“Inspection M-47. Maple Street renovation. Main panel shows dangerous heat damage at rear connection.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“I told David this cannot be approved until the panel is replaced.”

Then came another sentence.

“He says the city paperwork already shows it passed.”

Lucas stopped the tape.

“That was recorded six days before Dad died.”
