David Vale had retired years earlier.
He still lived less than twenty miles away.
Rachel did not confront him.
Instead, the family turned the records over to an attorney and requested the original fire investigation file.
That file contained one detail nobody in the family remembered.
Investigators had identified the likely origin of the fire as the wall near the main electrical panel.
Not Lucas’s motorcycle.
Not the workbench.
Not one of his tools.
The report specifically said:
Evidence insufficient to determine whether failure resulted from preexisting electrical defect or fire damage.
Rachel read the sentence again.
“Why did we all blame Lucas?”
Lucas looked down.
“Because I was there that night.”
But that was only part of it.
Rachel remembered David visiting after the fire.
He told the family he had warned Lucas about overloading the garage outlets.
Rachel’s mother repeated that story for years.
Yet there was no mention of that warning in David’s original statement to investigators.
The attorney obtained old Vale Electrical job records from a dissolved-business archive.
One invoice showed a replacement electrical panel had been billed to Samuel.
Cost:
$4,850.
But the model number recorded on the invoice did not match the panel recovered after the fire.
The expensive replacement had apparently been billed.
The old panel remained installed.
Ethan looked at Rachel.
“Your father paid for work that wasn’t done.”
That explained Samuel’s argument with David.
