Chapter 6 — The Inspection That Disappeared
Ethan listened to the entire tape.
Samuel described an electrical panel with damaged internal connections.
He believed it could overheat under heavy load.
According to the recording, David Vale insisted the panel had already passed municipal inspection.
Samuel disagreed.
Then Samuel said:
“I’m checking the city file tomorrow because somebody signed off on work that was not completed.”
Rachel stared at Lucas.
“Why didn’t investigators have this?”
“Because nobody knew it existed.”
“How did you?”
Lucas explained.
Three months earlier, he had been clearing out an old storage unit.
He found a box of Samuel’s work files Rachel’s mother had sent him years ago.
Inside was an index.
File M-47 contained a handwritten reference:
AUDIO — DESK.
Lucas remembered Samuel’s hidden desk compartment.
Then he realized Rachel had kept the desk after the fire.
“Why not just ask me?” Rachel demanded.
Lucas looked at her.
“I did.”
Rachel went quiet.
He had.
Two weeks earlier.
Rachel had told him never to contact her family again.
“So you broke in.”
“I used the old spare key.”
“That’s still breaking in.”
Lucas nodded.
“I know.”
He looked ashamed.
“I was wrong to do it.”
Then he looked directly at Rachel.
“But you spent twelve years believing I killed Dad.”
Rachel couldn’t answer.
Lucas pushed the recorder toward her.
“Now listen to the rest.”
Samuel’s voice returned.
This time he mentioned another name.
Martin Cole.
The municipal inspector who supposedly approved the electrical work.
Samuel’s final words on the tape were:
“Martin says he never signed that certificate.”
