Chapter 5 — The Frame Was Meant for Mia
Michael carefully removed the photograph from beneath the sofa.
“At least the picture itself isn’t torn.”
Evelyn nodded.
Then her expression became strange.
“There’s something else.”
Michael looked toward her.
“What?”
Evelyn picked up the broken frame.
“That frame wasn’t supposed to stay here after tonight.”
Mia frowned.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked toward her granddaughter.
Because the dinner that evening included a small surprise.
Not for Natalie.
Not for Michael.
For Mia.
Mia had recently started first grade.
Her teacher asked every student to bring a family photograph for a classroom project called:
THE PEOPLE WHO HELP ME GROW.
Mia wanted the picnic photograph.
But the classroom project required the picture to remain at school for several weeks.
Evelyn planned to surprise her with a newly printed copy in a child-safe wooden frame.
The old glass frame had been moved because Evelyn was comparing its photograph with the new print.
“Where’s the new one?” Michael asked.
Evelyn opened a drawer.
Inside was a brightly painted wooden frame.
No glass.
Across the bottom were the words:
MIA’S FAMILY
Mia’s face brightened.
“Mine?”
Evelyn nodded.
“It was supposed to be.”
Then her expression fell.
The irony was painful.
She had spent the morning creating something meant to make Mia happy.
Then by afternoon…
she had made the child cry over the very photograph connected to the surprise.
