Mia Was Blamed for Knocking Down the Family Picture — Then the Security Camera Showed the Door Had Shaken It From the Table

Chapter 6 — Evelyn Apologizes Without Hiding Behind the Accident

Evelyn sat beside Mia.

“Sweetheart.”

Mia looked toward her.

“I need to say something.”

Evelyn took a breath.

“You did not break the frame.”

Mia nodded.

“I know.”

“You told me that.”

Another nod.

“And you told me the door banged.”

“Yes.”

“That was true too.”

Mia wiped her face.

Evelyn continued.

“I saw you beside the broken picture and decided you had done it.”

“I should have asked what happened.”

“Instead, I blamed you.”

Mia looked at the broken glass.

“You thought I was lying.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Then:

“And I was wrong.”

She did not say:

But you were standing beside it.

She did not say:

But the picture meant a lot to me.

She did not say:

But I was stressed about dinner.

Those things explained her reaction.

They did not belong inside the apology.

“I’m sorry.”

Mia stared at her.

Then asked:

“Next time you believe door?”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“Next time I’ll check the door.”

Mia thought.

“And me?”

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

She understood the real question.

“I’ll listen to you first.”

Mia nodded.

That answer seemed more important.
