Mia Was Blamed for Knocking Down the Family Picture — Then the Security Camera Showed the Door Had Shaken It From the Table
Chapter 3 — The Door Had Been Acting Strange for Days
The hallway door had an automatic soft-close mechanism mounted near the top.
It was supposed to prevent exactly what the camera had recorded.
When someone released the door, it should close slowly.
Quietly.
Without slamming.
But three days earlier, Evelyn noticed it behaving strangely.
Sometimes the door closed normally.
Sometimes it remained open.
And twice it had suddenly slammed.
Michael stared at her.
“You knew?”
“I knew it was sticking.”
“You knew it slammed.”
Evelyn sighed.
“Twice.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your uncle David said he’d look at it tonight.”
Michael looked toward the broken frame.
“Tonight.”
“Yes.”
“So until tonight, you moved a glass picture onto a narrow table right beside a door you knew was malfunctioning.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened slightly.
“I didn’t think the door could shake the table.”
Michael nodded.
“Obviously.”
Then he looked toward Mia.
“But when it did, you didn’t think about the door.”
Evelyn followed his gaze.
“No.”
“You thought about Mia.”
Evelyn went quiet.
That was harder to explain.
The damaged frame was an accident.
Moving it had been a poor decision.
Ignoring the door mechanism had been another.
But blaming Mia…
that had happened afterward.
And nothing about the faulty door had forced Evelyn to do that.
