Natalie and her family arrived that evening.
The console table was empty.
The broken frame had been placed safely inside a box.
David had repaired the door.
Everything else looked normal.
Natalie noticed the empty spot.
“Wasn’t there a picture here earlier?”
Evelyn sighed.
“There was.”
Michael looked toward his mother.
Evelyn nodded.
Then told the truth.
“I moved it.”
“The hallway door slammed.”
“The frame fell.”
“Mia was nearby, and I blamed her.”
Natalie looked toward Mia.
“But she didn’t do it?”
“No.”
Evelyn continued.
“The camera showed exactly what happened.”
Mia immediately added:
“Door did bang.”
Natalie smiled.
“Sounds like you were right.”
Mia nodded proudly.
Evelyn then gave her the wooden family frame.
“This was supposed to be your surprise.”
Mia stared at it.
“For school?”
“For school.”
She hugged it carefully.
No glass.
No sharp corners.
No fear of breaking an irreplaceable object.
Then the family sat down to dinner.
Evelyn had planned to take a perfectly staged photograph afterward.
Instead, one cousin spilled water.
David’s shirt came untucked.
Mia refused to remove a paper crown she had made.
Michael was laughing at something outside the frame.
The photograph was imperfect.
Evelyn loved it anyway.
