Ethan plugged Julia’s phone into a charger.
Claire immediately protested.
“Don’t.”
“Why?”
“We don’t know what’s on it.”
“Exactly.”
The screen flickered.
Then powered on.
No passcode appeared.
Only a lock-screen notification.
One missed call.
Three unsent messages.
And a voice recording saved under the title:
IF CLAIRE FINDS THIS.
Claire stopped breathing for a moment.
Ethan looked at her.
“That’s you.”
Claire nodded.
He pressed play.
Julia’s voice filled the garage.
Quiet.
Breathless.
“Claire, if you’re hearing this, then I didn’t get back to the office.”
Claire covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“The missing assistance money isn’t random.”
“Someone has been creating fake emergency cases.”
“The names look real because they’re based on former clients.”
“Payments are approved after cases close.”
Julia paused.
Then said something that made Claire sit down.
“I think Martin knows.”
Ethan looked at his mother.
“Who’s Martin?”
Claire whispered:
“My boss.”
Martin Hale was Havenbrook’s executive director.
He had run the organization for twelve years.
He appeared in local newspapers.
Accepted community awards.
Spoke at charity events.
Claire trusted him.
Or had.
Julia’s recording wasn’t finished.
“Don’t confront him.”
“Don’t use a Havenbrook computer.”
“And check the travel card.”
The recording ended.
Ethan picked up the plastic card.
“Check it how?”
Claire shook her head.
Then Ethan noticed a small sticker across the back.
It looked like an ordinary transit label.
But one corner was lifting.
