Ethan Found a Frozen Backpack Hidden in the Garage — Then His Mother Saw the Name on the Travel Card

Chapter 5 — Locker 318

The number had six digits.

Underneath it were two words:

CENTRAL STATION.

Claire stared at the card.

“A locker.”

Ethan looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Central Station still has rental lockers.”

Claire immediately called the police.

This time, Ethan didn’t need to convince her.

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived less than an hour later.

Claire told her everything.

The backpack.

Julia’s disappearance.

The warning message.

The voice recording.

Detective Ortiz listened carefully.

“Why didn’t you report the bag sooner?”

Claire looked ashamed.

“I was scared.”

“Of Martin Hale?”

“Of whoever sent that message.”

Ortiz examined the travel card.

Then contacted transit security.

Locker 318 existed.

It had been rented using Julia Mercer’s card three days before she disappeared.

Police opened it that evening.

Inside were no clothes.

No money.

Only documents.

Boxes of them.

Printed payment records.

Copies of internal emails.

Client files.

And a flash drive.

One folder was marked:

CLOSED CASES — ACTIVE PAYMENTS.

Detective Ortiz opened it.

Dozens of names appeared.

Families who had received emergency assistance months earlier.

Some had moved away.

Some no longer qualified.

A few were deceased.

Yet money continued being issued under their names.

Claire stared at the totals.

“Who approved these?”

Ortiz looked at the signature field.

Every page contained the same initials.

M.H.
