Chapter 8 — The Will Nobody Followed
Walter had recently found Andrew’s original estate documents.
When Andrew died, everyone believed he left his company interests entirely to Walter.
But a later signed will existed.
It divided Andrew’s shares differently.
Half to Walter.
Half to Claire.
Claire stared at the document.
“Why would Andrew leave me anything after framing me?”
Walter shook his head.
“Maybe because he planned to confess.”
The later will had been prepared only six weeks before Andrew died.
It was properly witnessed.
Properly signed.
But it had never been submitted during the original estate proceedings.
Daniel frowned.
“Who handled the estate?”
Walter answered:
“Martin Chase.”
The family attorney.
Walter contacted him immediately.
Martin claimed he had never seen the newer will.
Then Walter showed him the envelope it had been found inside.
The envelope bore Martin’s law-office stamp.
His face changed.
An investigation followed.
Archived office logs showed the document had arrived before Andrew’s death.
It had been scanned.
Then incorrectly filed under another client’s estate.
There was no evidence Martin intentionally hid it.
But the mistake had enormous consequences.
Claire had been excluded from an inheritance she never knew existed.
Now the planned bakery sale could not simply proceed without resolving her ownership claim.
But Claire surprised everyone.
“I don’t want the money yet.”
Walter stared at her.
“Claire—”
“I want the truth corrected first.”
She wanted every family member who had been told she was a thief to receive the same records.
Andrew’s draft confession.
The computer logs.
The handwriting analysis.
All of it.
Walter nodded.
“You should have had that eleven years ago.”
