Chapter 9 — Why Mrs. Parker Chose Daniel
That evening, Daniel finally called Ethan’s teacher.
“Mrs. Parker, why did you tell Ethan the letter was only for me?”
Her answer surprised him.
Walter had asked her to.
But she had refused at first.
“I told him I wouldn’t help keep a secret from a parent unless there was a safety reason.”
Daniel listened.
Then Walter explained that he did not know whether Claire would panic and leave before anyone could explain.
Mrs. Parker still refused.
So instead, she wrote her own letter.
That was the envelope marked FOR DANIEL ONLY.
She wasn’t carrying Walter’s secret message.
She was warning Daniel.
Her letter explained exactly what happened at school.
An unfamiliar adult approached Ethan.
He identified himself as family.
He appeared to know private details about Claire.
Mrs. Parker did not allow Ethan to leave with him.
She verified Ethan’s approved pickup list.
Walter was not on it.
Then she contacted the school office and documented everything.
Only after that did she allow Walter to give Ethan the sealed pastry box.
“Why me?” Daniel asked.
Mrs. Parker answered:
“Because Mr. Harrison specifically asked that Claire not be contacted first.”
Daniel understood.
That request itself concerned her.
So Mrs. Parker wanted Daniel to know what had happened before the family opened Walter’s package.
Daniel smiled slightly.
“You thought something might be wrong.”
“I didn’t know what was wrong.”
Then she added:
“But when an adult tells a child to keep something from one parent, I don’t assume it’s harmless.”
Daniel looked toward Ethan.
“Thank you.”
The box of pastries had seemed like a gift.
Mrs. Parker had made sure it did not become a secret.
