Emily Was Seconds Away From Saying “I Do” — Then a Woman Put an Official Document in Her Hands

Chapter 4 — The Prenuptial Agreement

Emily suddenly remembered something.

“The prenup.”

Ryan looked toward her.

Two months earlier, Ryan had insisted they sign a prenuptial agreement.

Emily found it unusual.

Ryan had told her it protected both of them.

She agreed.

Now Nora asked to see it.

Emily’s father had a copy on his phone.

He opened the document.

Nora read silently.

Then stopped on Page 14.

“Who added this clause?”

Emily looked.

The language was complicated.

But the meaning became clear after Nora explained it.

If Thomas Carter transferred certain company shares to Emily after marriage, Ryan could become trustee of those shares if Emily became incapacitated.

Emily stared at Ryan.

“Why are you named trustee?”

“Your attorney reviewed it.”

Thomas shook his head.

“My attorney reviewed an earlier draft.”

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas opened his email.

The version his attorney approved did not contain the clause.

It had been added afterward.

Emily’s stomach turned.

“Ryan?”

“I didn’t add it.”

Nora asked:

“Who prepared the final document?”

Ryan said nothing.

Emily already knew.

His longtime attorney.

Graham Pike.

Nora’s expression changed when she heard the name.

“Graham Pike handled Ryan and Natalie’s divorce paperwork too.”

Emily slowly sat down.

The same lawyer connected Ryan’s unfinished first marriage…

was also connected to a clause that could give Ryan control over part of her family’s company.
