Chapter 9 — Ryan’s Wife Walks Into the Chapel
Natalie arrived after sunset.
Emily recognized her immediately from the marriage certificate photograph.
She looked older.
Tired.
Nervous.
Ryan stood when she entered.
“Natalie.”
She stopped several feet away.
“Hi, Ryan.”
Five years of silence sat between them.
Emily almost left.
Then Natalie looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily shook her head.
“You didn’t do this.”
Natalie nodded toward the abandoned wedding decorations.
“I still wish you’d found out another way.”
“So do I.”
Natalie brought one final piece of evidence.
A letter Graham sent her shortly after she left Ryan.
It said the divorce had been completed.
It even contained a case number.
Nora checked.
The case number belonged to an unrelated divorce.
Graham had apparently convinced both Ryan and Natalie that their marriage had ended without actually completing it.
“Why?” Ryan asked.
Natalie answered:
“Because if we were still married, companies under my name still looked connected to you.”
Graham could continue using the existing corporate structure without creating an entirely new paper trail.
He had taken advantage of Ryan’s original wrongdoing…
then kept it alive for his own benefit.
Ryan looked sick.
“I gave him everything he needed.”
Natalie nodded.
“You did.”
She did not excuse him.
Neither did Emily.
But now the full truth was finally visible.
