Chapter 9 — Mr. Dawson Faces Caleb
The anniversary dinner was delayed.
Mr. Dawson considered canceling it completely.
Richard disagreed.
“The entire event is supposed to celebrate forty years of company history.”
He looked toward Elias’s video.
“So tell the history.”
Before anything else, Mr. Dawson asked to speak with Caleb.
Maria allowed it.
But she stayed beside her son.
Mr. Dawson crouched.
“Caleb, I owe you an apology.”
Caleb looked at him.
“You said I stole it.”
“I did.”
“But you didn’t see me.”
Mr. Dawson nodded.
“No.”
“You just saw it in my bag.”
“Yes.”
Caleb looked toward Richard.
“He checked the camera.”
Mr. Dawson swallowed.
“He did.”
Then Caleb asked:
“Why didn’t you?”
Mr. Dawson had no clever answer.
“I should have.”
Caleb nodded.
Mr. Dawson continued.
“I’m sorry I accused you before knowing what happened.”
Caleb accepted the apology quietly.
Then Mr. Dawson stood and faced Maria.
“And I’m sorry to you.”
Maria looked toward the anniversary displays.
“I’m less interested in an apology to me than what you’re going to do about my father.”
Mr. Dawson nodded.
“We’re going to correct the exhibit tonight.”
The archive team worked quickly.
A new section appeared in the presentation:
THE MODEL SEVEN DEVELOPMENT TEAM.
Henry Dawson remained there.
But beside him appeared Elias Grant.
And the names of engineers who had disappeared from the simplified version of company history.
Then Richard added the recovered 1989 footage.
At the anniversary dinner, the room went silent when Henry’s younger voice filled the screen.
“Grant finally solved the problem that’s been beating us for six months.”
Then came the line nobody in the modern company had ever heard.
“When this works, his name belongs on it beside mine.”
Maria cried.
Caleb stared at the screen.
For the first time, he saw his grandfather young, laughing, and proud of something the family never fully understood.
