Chapter 5 — The Tape Lydia Didn’t Destroy
Security footage followed Lydia from the lobby.
She entered the executive elevator.
Went to the sixth floor.
Then walked into the records room.
She stayed there for four minutes.
When security searched the room, they found nothing.
Then Caleb spoke.
“What about her badge?”
Everyone turned.
“What?” Richard asked.
Caleb pointed toward Lydia.
Her large conference badge hung from a thick fabric lanyard.
“She keeps touching the bottom.”
Lydia stopped moving.
Richard looked at the plastic badge holder.
There was a small zippered pocket on the back.
Lydia closed her eyes.
Inside was the memory card.
Maria stared at her.
“You almost destroyed my son’s reputation over something you were carrying around your neck.”
Lydia said nothing.
Richard inserted the card into a secured laptop.
Several files appeared.
Photographs.
Scans of engineering notebooks.
Audio.
Then:

Richard opened it.
Grainy footage filled the screen.
A younger Henry Dawson stood inside a workshop.
Beside him was Elias Grant.
Maria covered her mouth.
“Dad.”
Caleb leaned closer.
He had only known his grandfather as an elderly man who fixed bicycles in the garage.
On the video, Elias was young.
Laughing.
Holding a prototype assembly.
Henry turned toward the camera.
“Let’s try Elias’s correction.”
Elias adjusted a component.
The machine activated.
The test succeeded.
Someone behind the camera cheered.
Then Henry slapped Elias on the shoulder.
“There it is.”
He smiled.
“Grant finally solved the problem that’s been beating us for six months.”
Maria started crying.
But the video wasn’t finished.
Henry continued:
“When this works, his name belongs on it beside mine.”
