An Elderly Hotel Guest Saw Ethan’s Antique Pendant — Then She Asked His Mother’s Name and Nearly Collapsed
Chapter 7 — Clara Comes to the Hotel
Clara flew in three days later.
Ethan waited for her outside the Grand Wellington.
When she stepped from the taxi, he hugged her tightly.
“You okay?”
Clara laughed nervously.
“Absolutely not.”
Eleanor was waiting in a private sitting room upstairs.
She stood when Clara entered.
Neither woman spoke.
Ethan remained near the door.
Clara looked at Eleanor’s face.
Then Eleanor looked at hers.
The resemblance was not dramatic.
But it was there.
The same narrow chin.
The same eyebrows.
The same habit of pressing their lips together when nervous.
Eleanor whispered:
“Hello, Clara.”
Clara answered:
“Hello.”
No “Mom.”
No immediate embrace.
Neither pretended fifty-one missing years could disappear in one afternoon.
They sat.
Clara asked questions.
“Who was my father?”
Eleanor smiled through tears.
“Thomas Hale.”
She showed Clara photographs.
Thomas at twenty.
Thomas beside an old motorcycle.
Thomas holding the exact silver pendant before giving it to Eleanor.
Then Eleanor showed her a letter Thomas wrote before his accident.
If it’s a girl, I still like Clara.
Clara froze.
“What?”
Eleanor nodded.
“That was the name we chose.”
Clara looked stunned.
Her adoptive parents had told her the maternity home paperwork listed:
Baby Clara.
They kept the name.
Arthur had taken Eleanor’s daughter.
But even he had failed to erase the name her parents had chosen for her.
