An Elderly Hotel Guest Saw Ethan’s Antique Pendant — Then She Asked His Mother’s Name and Nearly Collapsed
Chapter 9 — Eleanor’s Empty Birthday Chair
Clara stayed for a week.
During that time, Ethan learned something about Eleanor he had never expected.
Every July 14…
for fifty-one years…
Eleanor had set an extra place at breakfast.
Never at dinner.
Never where anyone would notice.
Just one additional teacup across from her.
“Why?” Ethan asked.
Eleanor looked toward Clara.
“Because that was her birthday.”
Even when Eleanor believed Clara had died, she marked the day.
Sometimes she visited a church.
Sometimes she bought flowers.
Sometimes she simply sat alone.
Clara listened quietly.
“I always hated my birthday.”
Eleanor looked surprised.
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Clara smiled sadly.
“Maybe because every year I wondered whether somebody somewhere remembered.”
Eleanor reached across the table.
She did not grab Clara’s hand.
She simply placed her own palm nearby.
Clara looked at it.
Then covered it with hers.
Ethan turned away for a moment.
He didn’t want them to see him crying.
Later that day, Mr. Collins approached him in the lobby.
“Ethan.”
“Yes, sir?”
The manager looked uncomfortable.
“About the other morning…”
Ethan waited.
“I should not have reprimanded you publicly.”
Ethan was surprised.
Mr. Collins continued.
“And Mrs. Parker told me why you left the desk. You were helping her because nobody from bell services responded.”
“Yes, sir.”
“You made the right call.”
Ethan nodded.
“Thank you.”
Mr. Collins glanced toward Eleanor and Clara sitting together across the lobby.
“Strange morning.”
Ethan smiled.
“You could say that.”
A lecture outside the entrance had accidentally put him in the exact place Eleanor needed him to be.
