An Elderly Hotel Guest Saw Ethan’s Antique Pendant — Then She Asked His Mother’s Name and Nearly Collapsed
Chapter 3 — Clara Never Knew Where the Pendant Came From
Ethan called his mother that evening.
“Mom, I need to ask you something weird.”
Clara laughed.
“That’s usually how your phone calls start.”
“The pendant you gave me.”
Silence.
“What about it?”
“Where did you get it?”
Clara answered quickly.
“It came with me when I was adopted.”
Ethan looked across the hotel lounge at Eleanor.
She had stayed.
“Did Grandma Anne ever tell you anything else?”
Clara hesitated.
“Only that somebody at the maternity home insisted it belonged to me.”
Ethan put the phone on speaker.
Eleanor leaned closer.
Clara continued.
Anne Bennett once told her there had been three things inside the adoption envelope.
A hospital bracelet.
The silver pendant.
And a handwritten card.
The bracelet and card were lost during a basement flood when Clara was a teenager.
The pendant survived because Clara wore it constantly.
“Do you remember what the card said?” Eleanor asked suddenly.
Clara went silent.
“Who’s that?”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Mom, there’s someone here you need to hear.”
He explained.
Slowly.
Carefully.
When he finished, Clara didn’t speak for almost thirty seconds.
Then:
“What did she ask about the card?”
Eleanor moved closer to the phone.
“Do you remember the words?”
Clara answered cautiously.
Anne had repeated them once.
Clara never forgot.
Her mother loved her before she ever saw the world.
Eleanor made a sound somewhere between a gasp and a sob.
Ethan looked at her.
“What?”
Eleanor began crying.
“I wrote that sentence.”
Clara went completely silent.
Eleanor whispered into the phone:
“I wrote it the night before you were born.”
