Chapter 7 — The Cardboard Tube
Prep Closet B was behind the old laboratory.
Boxes were stacked nearly to the ceiling.
Old microscopes.
Weather instruments.
Science-fair boards.
Then Mason found a long cardboard tube.
Across it, faded black marker read:
REED — BRIDGE.
Aiden opened it.
Inside was a large architectural drawing.
The River Walk Bridge.
Beautifully rendered.
Across the lower corner:
Concept Design: Samuel Reed & Maria Alvarez.
There was also a letter addressed:
TO THE STUDENTS OF RIVERTON MIDDLE SCHOOL.
Ms. Carter read it aloud.
Samuel wrote:
You may hear that I designed the River Walk Bridge. That is partly true.
Then:
Maria Alvarez first drew the repeating brace pattern that gave the bridge its recognizable shape. I developed the structural calculations and final engineering with her. The bridge would not look the way it does without both of us.
Aiden felt his throat tighten.
Samuel continued:
When you build something, remember the person who gave you the idea you almost forgot was not originally yours.
Maria wiped her eyes when Aiden read the letter to her later.
“He actually wrote it.”
“You didn’t know?”
She shook her head.
Samuel had told her he wanted to correct the historical record.
Maria assumed he never got the chance.
Instead, the correction had been sitting inside a school storage closet.
