Chapter 9 — Aiden Builds It Again
Aiden considered abandoning the project.
There was barely enough time.
Then Mason placed the original design sketch on the table.
“We’re rebuilding.”
Aiden looked at him.
“We?”
“You think I’m letting my clay become famous for destroying a bridge?”
Aiden laughed.
They started after lunch.
The replacement model was not identical.
It was better.
Aiden added proper adjustable feet beneath the supports.
No clay necessary.
Mason helped improve the deck connections.
Maria Alvarez visited the school and showed them why the repeating diagonal braces worked visually and structurally.
“Your grandfather was always better at calculations than I was,” she told Aiden.
“I was better at making things look less ugly.”
Aiden laughed.
“He would’ve agreed.”
Maria smiled.
For the engineering showcase, Aiden changed the title of his project.
Originally:
HOW BRIDGE BRACING DISTRIBUTES LOAD.
Now:
THE RIVER WALK BRIDGE — HOW COLLABORATION BECOMES STRUCTURE.
Beside the rebuilt model, he displayed copies of Samuel and Maria’s original sketches.
The signed drawing.
And Samuel’s letter to students.
Maria stood quietly near the back while Aiden presented.
“For years, people in Riverton called this Samuel Reed’s bridge.”
Aiden pointed toward Maria.
“My grandfather helped engineer it. But Maria Alvarez helped create the design people recognize.”
Then he smiled.
“Grandpa wanted students here to know that.”
Maria looked down, wiping her eyes.
Ms. Carter smiled.
The bridge project Chloe accidentally destroyed had been rebuilt.
But the story attached to it was now much larger than the model Aiden originally planned.
