Ryan Saw Vanessa Holding Their Crying Daughter in the Kitchen — Then Emma Pointed at the Security Camera

Chapter 1 — “Let Her Go”

Ryan Mitchell knew something was wrong before he reached the kitchen.

He could hear Emma crying from the hallway.

Not ordinary crying.

Not the frustrated tears of a ten-year-old who had lost a toy or been told she couldn’t use her tablet.

These were frightened, breathless sobs.

Ryan quickened his steps.

Then he entered the kitchen.

And froze.

Vanessa stood beside the counter gripping Emma tightly around the shoulders.

Emma was trying to pull away.

“Stop crying,” Vanessa said.

Emma shook her head.

“I want Dad.”

Ryan’s expression changed immediately.

“Vanessa.”

She turned.

“Let her go.”

“Ryan, this isn’t—”

“Let her go.”

Vanessa released Emma.

The girl ran straight toward her father.

Ryan pulled her against his chest.

Emma buried her face in his shirt.

He could feel her shaking.

“It’s okay,” he whispered. “I’m here.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“She’s exaggerating.”

Ryan looked at her.

“I walked in and saw you holding her while she was crying.”

“Because she wouldn’t listen.”

Ryan looked down at Emma.

“Tell me what happened.”

Emma tried to speak.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa interrupted.

“She got caught doing something she knows she’s not supposed to do.”

Ryan’s eyes remained on his daughter.

“Emma?”

Emma slowly lifted one trembling finger.

She pointed toward the ceiling.

Ryan followed her hand.

Mounted above the kitchen doorway was a small security camera.

They had installed it two months earlier after packages and cash began disappearing from the house.

Vanessa stopped talking.

Ryan looked at her.

“We don’t have to argue about what happened.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Ryan…”

He pulled out his phone.

“The camera already knows.”
