Liam Was Left Crying Over a Chocolate Mess — Then Daniel Found His Older Son Holding the Evidence on the Couch
Chapter 1 — “You Said Your Brother Did This?”
Little Liam was crying at the kitchen counter when Daniel walked into the room.
Chocolate was smeared across the polished table.
A sticky brown handprint covered one placemat.
Another streak ran toward the edge of the counter.
Daniel stopped.
“What happened?”
Before Liam could answer, his older brother Ethan pointed toward him.
“Liam did it.”
The six-year-old immediately shook his head.
“No!”
“He was playing with chocolate,” Ethan insisted.
Liam’s lower lip trembled.
“I wasn’t.”
Daniel looked from one boy to the other.
“Where did the chocolate come from?”
Ethan shrugged.
“I don’t know.”
Liam started crying harder.
“Daddy, I didn’t.”
Daniel crouched beside him.
“Okay. Let me figure it out.”
He remembered the small kitchen camera mounted above the pantry door.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
Opened the recording.
At first, the kitchen was empty.
Then Ethan appeared.
He carried a large chocolate bar.
A mixing bowl.
And an old yellow recipe card.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Ethan melted chocolate.
Spilled some across the table.
Then quickly wiped his hands and walked away.
Minutes later, Liam entered.
He saw the mess.
Touched nothing.
Then Ethan returned and immediately accused him.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
He walked into the living room.
Ethan sat on the couch.
A half-eaten chocolate bar was still in his hand.
Beside him was a napkin covered with the exact same melted chocolate.
Daniel stood in front of him.
“You said your brother did this?”
Ethan froze.
Liam watched from the doorway.
Daniel held up the phone.
“I saw the recording.”
Ethan’s face fell.
“Dad…”
“Why did you blame him?”
Ethan looked down.
Then Daniel noticed the yellow recipe card sticking halfway out of his pocket.
He pulled it free.
His expression changed instantly.
Across the top, in handwriting he had not seen in twenty-four years, were the words:
DANIEL & MARCUS — MIDNIGHT CHOCOLATE SQUARES.
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Where did you get this?”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“Uncle Marcus sent it.”
Daniel looked up sharply.
“You don’t have an Uncle Marcus.”
Ethan whispered:
“Yes, I do.”
