Chapter 6 — Vanessa Finally Understands Why Sophie Was Crying
After the calls ended, Daniel sat beside Sophie.
“The man really was a repair technician.”
Sophie looked at him.
“He fixes water?”
“Yes.”
“Was he bad?”
Daniel chose his words carefully.
“No.”
Then:
“But he came inside when we weren’t expecting him.”
“And that scared you.”
Sophie nodded.
“I thought Mommy didn’t know.”
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
She was standing quietly near the doorway.
Sophie continued.
“I told Mommy.”
“She said story.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
She sat on the floor across from Sophie.
“I did.”
Sophie hugged the teddy bear again.
Vanessa said:
“You were telling me something important.”
“And I didn’t listen.”
Sophie looked toward her.
“Why?”
Vanessa knew the answer.
Over the previous few weeks, Sophie had become fascinated with imaginative stories.
She told Vanessa there was “a lady in the garden.”
It turned out to be a neighbor standing behind the hedge.
Another afternoon, Sophie announced that “a monster was in the garage.”
It was Daniel wearing an oversized raincoat while carrying boxes.
Once she said “a man was looking through the window.”
That had been a delivery driver checking the house number through the glass beside the front door.
None of those things had been lies.
Sophie had described what she believed she saw using a child’s vocabulary.
But Vanessa had slowly changed the pattern in her own mind.
Sophie makes things up.
So when Sophie said:
“A man was here.”
Vanessa did not investigate.
She categorized.
Another story.
Another imagination.
Nothing to worry about.
“I thought I already knew what you meant,” Vanessa said.
Sophie frowned.
“But man was real.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa’s voice broke slightly.
“He was.”
