Chapter 7 — Daniel Checks Every Piece of the Story
Daniel still wanted confirmation beyond Northline’s explanation.
He checked the home’s security system.
The front door camera showed nothing unusual.
That explained why Vanessa believed nobody arrived.
Marcus Lane had parked his service van along the side street and used the side entrance listed in the work order.
A camera covering the driveway caught part of the van.
NORTHLINE HOME SERVICES.
Timestamp:
2:15 PM.
The smart-lock log showed entry at 2:17.
The interior hallway camera showed Marcus entering.
Green work jacket.
Black toolbox.
Exactly as Sophie described.
He stopped when he saw her.
The camera had audio.
Marcus said:
“Oh. Hi there. I thought nobody was home.”
Sophie answered:
“Mommy upstairs.”
Marcus asked:
“Do you know where the utility closet is?”
Sophie pointed.
The footage then showed Marcus walking toward it.
Several minutes later, he returned.
He looked toward the stairs.
Hesitated.
Then left through the same side door.
As he pulled off one glove, something silver fell from his hand.
The ring.
Sophie later found it.
Every detail she had given them matched.
Daniel paused the recording.
“She didn’t exaggerate anything.”
Vanessa stared at the screen.
“No.”
Then Daniel checked the camera from Sophie’s bedroom hallway.
Several minutes after Marcus left, Sophie ran upstairs.
She found Vanessa on her work call.
The recording did not capture their conversation clearly.
But it showed Sophie’s gestures.
Pointing downstairs.
Pointing toward the side entrance.
Holding up the ring.
Vanessa barely looked.
She muted her meeting.
Spoke briefly.
Then returned to the call.
Later, when Sophie continued insisting, Vanessa took her to the bedroom and told her to sit quietly.
Vanessa watched the footage with tears in her eyes.
“I didn’t even look at the ring.”
Daniel said nothing.
She continued.
“She was literally holding evidence.”
That was true.
But the deeper problem was not the ring.
Sophie should not have needed physical evidence before her mother considered that something unexpected might have happened.
