Chapter 4 — Northline Says the Appointment Was Canceled
Daniel called Northline Home Services.
The dispatcher pulled up work order 88417.
“Yes, sir.”
“That visit was canceled at 9:07 this morning.”
Daniel looked toward the service tag in his hand.
“Then why did Marcus Lane enter my house at 2:17?”
Silence.
Keyboard clicks followed.
“Can you hold for a moment?”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“No.”
“Please tell me what your system shows.”
The dispatcher hesitated.
Then explained.
The normal appointment had indeed been canceled.
But at 1:42 PM, the home’s connected moisture sensor sent another automated alert.
Because Vanessa had originally booked Northline through the sensor manufacturer’s maintenance program, the alert automatically created a priority diagnostic request.
The system reopened the same work order.
Daniel stared.
“Without calling us?”
“It appears so.”
“And it reused the temporary door code?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked horrified.
When she first registered for the maintenance plan months earlier, she had enabled an option labeled:
AUTHORIZED EMERGENCY SERVICE ACCESS.
She remembered doing it.
They had suffered a minor pipe leak while traveling.
Vanessa liked the idea that a technician could enter during a verified emergency.
What she did not realize was that the authorization remained active for future sensor-generated service calls.
Even when the family was home.
Even after a separately scheduled visit had been canceled.
Daniel asked:
“Was Marcus told the house was empty?”
The dispatcher checked.
“His tablet says: ‘Remote entry authorized. Occupancy status unavailable.’”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“That is not the same as nobody being home.”
“No, sir.”
“Did he try calling?”
A call had been placed at 2:12.
Vanessa checked her phone.
One missed call.
Unknown number.
She had been upstairs on a work video meeting.
Her phone was silenced.
Marcus Lane arrived five minutes later.
He entered using the authorized code.
And found Sophie in the hallway.
The stranger was starting to make sense.
But one question remained.
Why hadn’t Marcus immediately announced himself to Vanessa?
