Chapter 5 — The Letters That Never Arrived
Michael continued reading.
Evelyn claimed she had written to him repeatedly.
Not only birthday cards.
Letters.
Apologies.
Copies of legal documents.
Even a request to meet Lily after she was born.
According to Evelyn, Claire had answered several of those letters herself.
Michael lowered the page.
“Did you?”
Claire covered her face.
“At first.”
“What does that mean?”
“I answered her.”
“Pretending to be me?”
“No.”
Claire looked up.
“As myself.”
She explained that Evelyn contacted her months after the original family argument.
Evelyn wanted Claire to persuade Michael to meet.
Claire refused.
Then Evelyn revealed something Claire didn’t want Michael to know.
The accusation that had ended their relationship had never happened.
Evelyn had never called Claire a gold digger.
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Then where did that come from?”
Claire looked down.
“Me.”
The kitchen went completely silent.
Michael stared at her.
“You told me my mother said it.”
Claire nodded.
“Why?”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Because I was scared you were going to choose her over me.”
Michael couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Claire had been twenty-four at the time.
Newly married.
Pregnant.
And constantly arguing with Evelyn about boundaries.
During one particularly bad fight, Claire exaggerated something Evelyn said.
Then Michael confronted his mother before Claire could take it back.
The situation exploded.
“You could have fixed it,” Michael said.
Claire nodded.
“Every day after that made it harder.”
“So instead you let me believe my mother hated you?”
Claire whispered.
“Yes.”
But the letter contained an even bigger revelation.
