Chapter 7 — What Claire Tried to Hide
The recording resumed.
Lily held Evelyn’s envelope tightly.
Claire stood in front of her.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Lily.”
“Dad should read it.”
Claire reached for the envelope.
Lily moved away.
“I’m telling him.”
Claire suddenly stopped.
Then she said something Michael hadn’t expected.
“If your dad reads that, he might leave us.”
Lily’s face crumpled.
“Why?”
“Because he’ll be angry.”
“At me?”
“No.”
Claire began crying herself.
“At me.”
Lily looked terrified.
“I don’t want Dad to leave.”
Claire approached her.
“Then let me handle this.”
That was the moment Lily started sobbing.
Michael stopped the recording.
His expression changed from anger to something quieter.
“You made her think our family would fall apart if she told me the truth.”
Claire shook her head.
“I wasn’t thinking.”
“Clearly.”
Michael crouched beside Lily.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“None of this is your responsibility.”
“Are you leaving?”
The question broke something inside him.
“No decision between Mom and me is ever going to be your fault.”
Lily hugged him.
Michael held her tightly.
Then he looked toward Claire.
“But things are going to change.”
