Lily Pointed at the Kitchen Camera While Her Mother Explained — Then Michael Watched What Happened Before He Came Home
Chapter 8 — The Phone Call
Michael waited until Lily was upstairs with a neighbor before making the call.
He hadn’t dialed Evelyn’s number in years.
His hands shook.
The number rang five times.
Then an older woman answered.
“Hello?”
Michael couldn’t speak.
He recognized her voice immediately.
“Mom.”
Silence.
Then a quiet gasp.
“Michael?”
He closed his eyes.
“Yeah.”
Evelyn began crying.
Neither knew what to say first.
Eventually Michael asked the question that had been haunting him.
“Why didn’t you come to the house?”
“I did.”
Michael frowned.
“When?”
“Twice.”
Evelyn explained.
The first time, Claire answered the door.
She told Evelyn Michael didn’t want to see her.
The second time, nobody was home.
After that, Evelyn stopped trying in person.
But she kept writing.
“Why send the letter through Lily’s school?”
Evelyn hesitated.
“Because I’m sick.”
Michael’s heart dropped.
“What?”
“Nothing immediate.”
Her voice was calm.
“But I realized I could keep waiting for the perfect moment until there weren’t any moments left.”
Michael covered his eyes.
“I wasted eight years.”
“So did I.”
“You tried.”
Evelyn was quiet.
“Michael, anger makes everyone remember themselves as more innocent than they were.”
He understood what she meant.
His mother wasn’t pretending their old relationship had been perfect.
But the lie that destroyed it had never been hers.
“Can I bring Lily to see you?” he asked.
Evelyn started crying again.
“Please.”
