Jordan diverts household funds to stop an emergency eviction — Then Clara discovers the hidden transaction that drains their own daughter’s tuition account
Chapter 8 — Reaching Out to Family for Help
Jordan stared at the glowing laptop screen, the signed digital agreement staring back at him like a hollow victory.
The debt was acknowledged, but the bank balance remained dangerously empty.
“We need actual funds,” Clara repeated, tapping her finger against the edge of the kitchen counter.
“Paper promises don’t clear at the bank.”
Jordan nodded slowly, knowing his wife was completely right.
He pulled his phone from his pocket and unlocked the screen.
His thumb hovered over his contacts list.
There was one person left who might understand the emergency without lecturing them for hours.
Jordan walked away from the kitchen island toward the quiet corner of the living room.
He pressed his brother’s number and held the phone to his ear.
The line rang twice before a familiar voice picked up.
“Jordan? Everything alright?” his brother asked from the other end.
“Hey, Sam,” Jordan said, his voice dropping an octave.
“I need to talk to you about something important.”
Jordan laid out the situation without making excuses or trying to shift the blame.
He explained the past-due rent notice, the sudden bank shortfall, and the desperate choice he had made to protect Amber from immediate homelessness.
Sam listened in silence for several long moments.
“You cleared out your primary housing buffer for a niece?” Sam asked, disbelief heavy in his tone.
“I panicked,” Jordan admitted, staring down at the carpet.
“She had nowhere to go, Sam. But now Clara and I are on the verge of missing our own deadline.”
Sam let out a long breath through his nose.
“You always jump headfirst into other people’s fires without checking if your own house is burning down,” Sam muttered.
“I know,” Jordan said softly.
“I know I messed up. But I need a short-term bridge loan so we don’t risk our apartment.”
“Let me look at my accounts,” Sam said.
“Don’t hang up.”
Jordan waited in the quiet room, the sound of his own breathing loud in his ears.
Across the room, Clara stood by the kitchen sink, watching him with an unreadable expression.
A sharp notification tone broke the silence from Jordan’s phone.
He pulled the device away from his ear to look at the screen.
An incoming transfer confirmation banner flashed across the display.
The deposited amount matched the exact deficit needed to clear their overdue rent balance.
Sam’s voice came back through the speaker.
“The wire has been sent,” Sam said.
“It should clear your account immediately.”
Jordan checked his banking app, watching the negative balance vanish and turn green.
“Thank you, Sam,” Jordan said, his throat tight with sudden relief.
“Pay me back when Amber starts sending her installments,” Sam instructed.
“And next time, call me before you play hero.”
Jordan ended the call and walked back into the kitchen to show Clara the updated balance on his phone.
Clara looked at the screen, her tense shoulders finally dropping an inch.
Before either of them could speak another word, a sharp buzz came from the hallway near the front door.
