Jordan diverts household funds to stop an emergency eviction — Then Clara discovers the hidden transaction that drains their own daughter’s tuition account
Chapter 2 — Checking the Joint Account Balances
Jordan walked over to the coffee table and picked up his silver laptop.
He carried it back to the kitchen and set it down on the granite countertop next to the past-due notice.
The screen was already unlocked, displaying the browser shortcut for their primary financial institution.
“Clara, look,” Jordan said, tapping the touchpad with a trembling finger. “It was a direct wire. It had to clear before midnight or the landlord locked her out.”
Clara leaned over the counter, her eyes fixed on the display.
Jordan clicked on the recent activity tab and entered his security PIN.
The page refreshed with a slow spin of a blue loading wheel.
The main checking account balance appeared at the top of the screen in bold black numbers.
The available funds were dangerously low, sitting at a fraction of their normal monthly average.
Clara scrolled down the transaction history, her breath catching in her throat.
There it was, timestamped at 11:42 PM the previous night.
An outgoing wire transfer of three thousand dollars.
The recipient name was listed as Amber, alongside a routing number for a local property management firm.
“Three thousand dollars?” Clara asked, her voice dangerously quiet. “You sent three thousand dollars out of our joint account in the middle of the night?”
“I told you, she was desperate,” Jordan repeated, his voice defensive.
“You didn’t just help her, Jordan,” Clara said, pointing directly at the computer screen. “You emptied the buffer we keep for Savannah’s tuition and our rent.”
Jordan stared at the monitor, his face pale as he read the zeroed-out margin for their upcoming automatic bill payments.
“She promised she would pay me back next month,” Jordan muttered.
“With what money?” Clara demanded. “Amber hasn’t had a steady job in six months.”
Jordan opened his mouth to reply, but the sudden chiming sound of his smartphone interrupted him.
A text message notification popped up brightly on the screen of his phone, which lay face up right beside the laptop.
The sender ID on the lock screen showed a message from Amber.
