Jordan diverts household funds to stop an emergency eviction — Then Clara discovers the hidden transaction that drains their own daughter’s tuition account
Chapter 3 — The Identity of the Person Saved
Jordan did not move to pick up the phone.
The screen continued to glow against the dark grain of the kitchen island.
Amber’s name remained visible on the display, beneath a preview of the text.
Clara reached out, tapped the screen once, and opened the message thread.
The chat history scrolled upward automatically.
The most recent message from Amber had arrived just seconds ago.
*Thank you so much, Uncle Jordan,* the text read. *The management office just emailed me the receipt. The door lock code is reset and I’m officially safe.*
Clara stared at the glowing words.
She read the message twice, letting every syllable sink in.
“Your niece Amber,” Clara said, her voice entirely flat.
Jordan nodded slowly, looking down at his sneakers.
“She was hours away from being locked out of her apartment,” Jordan admitted. “She called me crying at eleven o’clock at night. She had nowhere else to go.”
Clara scrolled further up the text thread.
She saw the previous messages exchanged between Jordan and Amber over the past week.
There were frantic photos of past-due eviction warnings taped to an apartment door.
There were pleading requests for financial help that Jordan had clearly been entertaining behind Clara’s back for days.
“You’ve been talking to her about our money all week,” Clara said, turning the laptop slightly so Jordan had to look at the transaction date matching the earliest text.
“I didn’t want to bother you while you were working late shifts,” Jordan mumbled.
“Bother me?” Clara asked. “Jordan, this is our shared household money.”
“She’s my only sibling’s daughter,” Jordan argued, his voice rising in defense. “What was I supposed to do, just let her sleep in her car?”
Clara closed the laptop lid with a sharp click that echoed in the quiet kitchen.
She walked over to the mail holder by the refrigerator and pulled out a thick envelope bearing the official emblem of Savannah’s elementary academy.
She placed the envelope squarely in front of Jordan on the counter.
“You saved Amber from getting locked out of her apartment,” Clara said coldly.
Jordan looked down at the academy envelope.
“Savannah’s school tuition is due tomorrow morning,” Clara added.
