Brenda’s fingers gripped the heavy fabric of her uniform apron.
She took one slow step backward, away from the digital tablet and the open housekeeping cart.
The soft rubber soles of her sneakers squeaked against the grey commercial carpet.
“You’re not looking at everything,” Brenda muttered, her eyes darting toward the double doors at the end of the service corridor.
Mr. Harrison planted his shoes firmly in the center of the hallway.
He blocked the direct path toward the service exit.
“Stay right where you are, Brenda,” Mr. Harrison warned, his voice echoing off the paneled walls.
Lily kept the digital tablet raised, the live security feed still blinking in the corner of the glass screen.
“She’s heading for the stairs,” Lily said, pointing toward the emergency stairwell door twenty feet down the hall.
Brenda ignored the warning.
She spun around on her heel and lunged toward the open stairwell latch.
Mr. Harrison moved faster, closing the distance between them in three long strides.
Brenda threw her hands up defensively as the manager stepped into her path.
The sharp movement caused her deep apron pocket to violently invert.
Something heavy and metallic whipped through the air.
A heavy gold wristwatch tumbled out of the fabric pouch.
It bounced once on the grey carpet with a dull thud.
A diamond-studded earring followed it, rolling in a tight circle before coming to a rest against the baseboard.
The metal sparkled brightly under the harsh overhead LED lighting of the corridor.
Mr. Harrison looked down at the floor, then back up at Brenda.
“Empty your pockets,” Mr. Harrison demanded, extending a hand toward the door.
Brenda stared at the gold watch lying on the carpet, her face completely draining of color.
Lily zoomed in with the tablet camera, capturing a clear close-up of the engraved initials on the back of the wristwatch case.
The serial number engraved on the watch casing matched an active security report filed earlier that morning by a hotel guest staying in room 412.
