Chapter 1 — The Empty Seat
Grace had been searching for her blue ribbon when she wandered into the formal dining room.
Nobody normally used that room for breakfast.
The long walnut table was reserved for holidays, birthdays, and dinners Victoria described as “important.”
That morning, Victoria sat alone at one end reading the newspaper.
Grace walked slowly around the table.
Then something caught her eye.
An old place card rested beside an empty chair.
It wasn’t like the newer white cards Victoria used at Christmas.
This one had yellowed around the edges.
The lettering was handwritten in dark blue ink.
Grace picked it up.
“Mom… who is this?”
Victoria lowered the newspaper.
The moment she saw the card, her expression changed.
“Where did you find that?”
Grace pointed toward the empty chair.
“Right there.”
Victoria stood quickly.
“Give it to me.”
Before Grace could move, another voice came from the doorway.
“Give me that.”
Elderly Margaret had entered the room.
She stared at the card in Grace’s hand as though it were something dangerous.
Victoria looked sharply toward her mother.
Margaret stepped closer.
Then lowered her voice.
“You told me you got rid of everything.”
Grace frowned.
“Why does everybody know this name except me?”
Nobody answered.
Grace looked down at the card again.
The name was simple.
EVELYN HARPER.
Grace looked at Victoria.
“Who’s Evelyn?”
Victoria’s face had gone pale.
Margaret reached for the card.
But Grace instinctively pulled it closer to her chest.
“Was she family?”
Margaret whispered:
“Yes.”
Victoria turned toward her.
“Mom.”
Margaret ignored the warning.
She looked directly at Grace.
“Evelyn was your mother’s sister.”
Grace stared at Victoria.
“You have a sister?”
Victoria said nothing.
Margaret’s next sentence was even worse.
“She had one.”
“Had?”
Margaret slowly sat down.
“Evelyn disappeared seventeen years ago.”
