Chapter 7 — Inside the Bracelet
That evening Ryan searched through Emily’s belongings.
Boxes he hadn’t opened in years.
Photographs.
Old birthday cards.
Documents.
At the bottom of one drawer he found a photograph of Emily wearing the silver bracelet.
He studied it.
Then Sophie pointed at the picture.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
“Mine doesn’t look like that.”
Ryan looked closer.
The bracelet in the photograph had a small oval charm.
The bracelet Sophie carried had the same charm.
But something was different.
A tiny seam ran around the edge.
Ryan had always assumed it was decorative.
He searched online for the model.
Nothing.
Then he found another photograph.
Emily sitting beside her father.
On the back, her father had written:
FOR EMILY — KEEP THE KEY CLOSE.
Ryan read the words twice.
“The key?”
He immediately called Detective Grant.
Police had upgraded the case after discovering that Thomas had deliberately removed the bag from the hallway.
Ryan explained the photograph.
The detective asked him to bring every related document to the station.
While Ryan gathered the papers, Sophie opened one of her mother’s old jewelry boxes.
Inside was a folded instruction booklet for a bank.
At the top was the name:
HARBOR TRUST & SAFE DEPOSIT SERVICES.
Ryan remembered the bank.
Emily’s father had used it for years.
Ryan called the number.
The employee asked for Emily’s information.
Then she became quiet.
“Mr. Carter, there is still an active safe-deposit box under your wife’s estate.”
Ryan nearly dropped the phone.
“That’s impossible. Her estate was settled years ago.”
“This box was never closed.”
“Who has access?”
The employee checked.
“According to the original documents, access requires two things.”
“What?”
“The estate authorization.”
She paused.
“And a physical key.”
Ryan looked at Sophie’s empty bracelet pocket.
Charles hadn’t wanted the bracelet.
He wanted what was hidden inside it.
