Little Sophie Pointed at the Security Monitor After Her Backpack Vanished — Then Her Father Saw Who Had Taken It

Chapter 6 — Emily’s Attorney

Ryan hadn’t thought about Charles Whitmore since shortly after Emily’s death.

Charles had handled her estate.

Insurance paperwork.

Medical documents.

The small trust Emily had created for Sophie.

Everything.

Then, once the paperwork was finished, Charles disappeared from their lives.

Ryan stared at the security image.

“Why would he be here?”

Sophie looked up.

“He knew Mommy’s name.”

Ryan turned toward her.

“What exactly did he say?”

Sophie thought carefully.

“He asked if my name was Sophie Carter.”

Ryan’s stomach dropped.

“And then?”

“I said yes.”

“Then what?”

“He asked if my mommy gave me something silver.”

Nobody at the desk moved.

Ryan slowly looked toward the empty zipper inside the backpack.

Charles had known about the bracelet.

Not guessed.

Known.

Police arrived fifteen minutes later.

Officer Melissa Grant listened as Ryan explained everything.

Security footage.

The deleted forty-seven seconds.

Thomas Holloway.

Charles Whitmore.

And the missing bracelet.

The center immediately provided copies of every remaining recording.

Police contacted Thomas.

His phone went directly to voicemail.

Then they contacted Charles Whitmore’s old law office.

The receptionist gave them unexpected news.

Charles had retired eighteen months earlier.

But that wasn’t the strange part.

He had called the office that morning asking for an archived file.

The file belonged to Emily Carter.

Ryan stared at Officer Grant.

“Why would he suddenly want my wife’s file after three years?”

The officer didn’t know.

But Ryan remembered something.

The bracelet had never simply been jewelry.

Emily’s father had given it to her when she graduated from college.

And shortly before Emily died, she had made Ryan promise something.

“Don’t ever let Sophie lose it.”

At the time, Ryan thought she was being sentimental.

Now he wondered whether Emily had been trying to tell him something else.
