Lucas was suspended that night.
An independent review began the following morning.
The missing recipe book was recovered from his apartment.
Several photographed pages were also found on his personal computer.
Bellmore House terminated his employment after the investigation confirmed undisclosed conflicts of interest and improper billing through LB Culinary Concepts.
The restaurant also contacted Rosa.
Elaine apologized personally.
Henry did too.
“You shouldn’t have had to fight alone,” he told her.
Rosa looked toward the old kitchen.
“I thought nobody would believe me.”
Henry smiled sadly.
“Somebody did.”
“Who?”
“Enough people wrote letters that I finally came back.”
Rosa agreed to return.
Not as pastry chef.
She asked for something different.
A role helping protect the restaurant’s historical recipes and train younger cooks.
Henry immediately agreed.
The employee assistance fund was restored.
Money improperly paid through Lucas’s company was pursued through legal channels.
And several workers who had left during the previous year were invited to speak confidentially about their treatment.
Some returned.
Some didn’t.
Henry understood.
One broken workplace couldn’t be repaired by pretending nothing happened.
One afternoon, Rosa opened Margaret’s old recipe book.
Henry stood beside her.
She turned to the Sunday sauce.
“You know Lucas wasn’t completely wrong about one thing.”
Henry raised an eyebrow.
“Careful.”
Rosa smiled.
“It did have too much rosemary lately.”
Henry laughed for the first time since returning.
