Chapter 3 — Why Henry Came Back
Elaine closed the kitchen door.
“Henry, what’s going on?”
He looked toward the dining room.
“I’ve been receiving letters.”
Lucas frowned.
“From who?”
“Employees.”
Elaine’s expression changed.
Henry continued.
“Former employees too.”
He removed several folded pages from his coat.
“They say Bellmore House isn’t the place Margaret and I built anymore.”
Lucas laughed without humor.
“Of course it isn’t. That was fifty years ago.”
Henry looked at him calmly.
“They’re not complaining about the furniture.”
He placed the letters on a prep table.
One was from a dishwasher.
Another from a former server.
One had no name at all.
They described unpaid overtime.
Shifts changed without notice.
Staff meals eliminated.
Employees being publicly humiliated for small mistakes.
And several experienced workers suddenly disappearing from the schedule after questioning Lucas.
Lucas shook his head.
“Disgruntled employees always complain.”
Elaine looked at him.
“Some of these people worked here for years.”
“And some weren’t good enough anymore.”
Henry watched him carefully.
“What about Rosa?”
Lucas’s expression changed slightly.
Rosa Mendoza had worked at Bellmore House for nineteen years.
She had been the pastry chef.
Two months earlier, she suddenly left.
Lucas had told everyone she resigned.
Henry reached into his coat again.
“She says she didn’t resign.”
Lucas stared at him.
“She was terminated.”
“Why?”
“Performance issues.”
Henry nodded.
“Interesting.”
“Why?”
Henry handed Elaine another page.
It was a photograph of a handwritten recipe card.
Margaret Bell’s original chocolate torte.
Elaine recognized it immediately.
Then Henry placed a second document beside it.
A menu from Lucas’s previous restaurant.
The dessert listed there was almost identical.
Same ingredients.
Same preparation.
Same unusual orange glaze.
But the name beneath it read:
CHEF LUCAS BENNETT’S SIGNATURE TORTE.
Lucas stopped smiling.
