Chef Lucas Tried to Throw Henry Out of the Kitchen — Then the Manager Showed Him the Signature on the Wall

Chapter 2 — Henry Bell

Henry smiled faintly.

“Hello, Elaine.”

Elaine rushed forward and hugged him.

“Nobody told me you were coming.”

“That was intentional.”

Lucas looked between them.

“You’re Henry Bell?”

Henry nodded.

Bellmore House had been named after Henry’s family.

He opened the original restaurant with his wife Margaret almost fifty years earlier.

They started with twelve tables.

One stove.

And a handwritten menu.

Over the years, Bellmore House became one of the best-known restaurants in the neighborhood.

Then Margaret died.

Henry eventually stepped away.

The restaurant passed into a family trust.

Professional managers were hired.

Henry stopped appearing publicly.

Lucas had heard the story.

He had simply never met the man.

“I apologize,” Lucas said.

Henry looked at him.

“For what?”

Lucas hesitated.

“I didn’t recognize you.”

Henry smiled slightly.

“That’s not what you should apologize for.”

Lucas’s face tightened.

Elaine looked uncomfortable.

Henry walked back toward the copper pot.

“This used to be Margaret’s Sunday sauce.”

Lucas folded his arms.

“It’s been updated.”

“I noticed.”

“Customers like it.”

Henry tasted a drop from a clean spoon.

Then shook his head.

“Some probably do.”

Lucas gave a short laugh.

“With respect, kitchens change.”

Henry looked at him.

“They should.”

He placed the spoon down.

“But sometimes people change things because they’re better.”

He glanced around the kitchen.

“And sometimes they change them because they want everyone to know they’re in charge.”

The room became quiet.

Lucas stared at him.

“If you came here to criticize my work, you could have scheduled a meeting.”

Henry nodded.

“Then I wouldn’t have learned what I came here to learn.”
