Amber discovers her husband’s secret dress purchase — Then a text thread reveals he planned the betrayal weeks ago
Chapter 9 — Derek’s Confession of Insecurity
Derek sat down slowly on the top carpeted step of the staircase.
He rested his elbows on his knees and stared at the dark knots in the hardwood floor.
The confident, defensive tone he had maintained all evening was completely gone.
I was scared, Derek whispered.
The words came out rough and uneven in the quiet hallway.
Amber stayed standing by the master bedroom doorway.
Samantha remained frozen with her hand gripping the wooden banister.
Scared of what, Derek? Amber asked.
Her voice was steady, though her hands still trembled slightly around the tablet.
Scared that you were pulling away, Derek said, looking up toward Amber.
Scared that Sammy wouldn’t look at me the same way as she got older.
Derek gestured vaguely toward their teenage daughter.
You’ve always been the organized one, Amber.
You handle the schedules, the rules, the grades, the discipline.
You’re the stable center of this house.
And what am I? Derek asked, his voice cracking.
I’m the fun parent who just shows up on the weekends or signs permission slips.
I felt like I was losing my place in this family.
I thought if I gave her what she wanted without the friction, she would love me more.
Amber stared down at her husband.
The admission hung heavily in the air, stripped of all corporate spin and parental justification.
You thought buying affection would make you secure, Amber said quietly.
And instead, you drove a wedge between all of us.
Derek nodded slowly.
He looked back down at the floor between his boots.
I know, Derek said.
I know it was toxic.
I know I pitted Sammy against you just so I could feel like the hero for five minutes.
Samantha let out a sharp, breathless sound from the top of the landing.
She stepped forward, her eyes flashing with sudden hurt.
Dad, Samantha said, her voice shaking with emotion.
Manipulating us behind our backs didn’t make me love you more.
It just made me feel like I couldn’t trust anything you did.
Derek flinched as if he had been physically struck.
He opened his mouth to reply, but no words came out.
Samantha unlocked her phone with a sharp tap of her thumb.
She held the glowing screen up toward both of them.
There’s something else you forgot you sent me, Dad, Samantha said, her voice dropping into a cold, quiet anger.
You didn’t just buy the dress.
