Amber discovers her husband’s secret dress purchase — Then a text thread reveals he planned the betrayal weeks ago
Chapter 8 — Stopping the Escape and Demanding Accountability
Derek took a half step toward the stairs.
His boots creaked against the hardwood planking.
I am done listening to this character assassination, Derek said.
He turned his shoulder toward the master bedroom.
I am going downstairs to get some air.
Amber did not lower the tablet.
She did not move an inch.
You are not going anywhere, Derek, Amber said.
Her voice dropped an octave, carrying a cold, absolute resolve.
We are going to finish this conversation right here.
Derek stopped with his back half-turned.
He let out a scoff of disbelief.
What do you want, Amber? A public confession? A signed document admitting I bought a dress?
I want the truth, Amber said.
And you are going to give it to us right now.
Footsteps echoed from the top of the stairwell behind Derek.
Samantha stepped out of the upper hallway.
She wore an oversized sweatshirt and pajama pants.
Her phone was clutched tightly in her hand.
Her eyes were wide and red-rimmed.
She had clearly been standing at the edge of the landing, listening to every word.
Dad? Samantha asked.
Her voice trembled slightly in the quiet air of the second-floor corridor.
Derek froze.
His posture stiffened instantly.
His hands came out of his denim jacket pockets.
Sammy, Derek said, turning around with a strained, hurried smile.
Go back to your room.
Your mother and I are just discussing some adult household things.
Samantha did not move.
She gripped the wooden banister with white knuckles.
Did you buy that dress behind Mom’s back just to make her look like the bad guy? Samantha asked.
The question hung heavily in the confined space between them.
Derek looked back and forth between his daughter and his wife.
The defensive walls he had built all evening began to visibly crack.
Samantha stared at him, waiting for an answer that wasn’t wrapped in an excuse.
Derek swallowed hard, his throat working visibly as his manufactured composure completely dissolved.
Okay, Derek muttered, his shoulders slumping.
Just stop looking at me like that.
Derek exhaled a long, shaky breath and looked down at the floorboards between his boots.
He agreed to sit down right there on the top step and talk honestly without deflection.
