Amber stood frozen in the bedroom doorway.
Her gaze was fixed entirely on the grey shopping bag resting on the upholstered accent chair.
The house was quiet except for the low hum of the refrigerator downstairs.
She stepped into the room, her grey cardigan brushing softly against her black top.
She reached into the crisp paper bag and pulled out a long retail receipt.
The itemized list stared right back at her.
A formal dress.
Matching shoes.
Silver accessories.
The total came to an amount they had explicitly agreed they could not afford this month.
Tears welled instantly in her eyes as the numbers sank in.
Derek walked into the room from the hallway.
He was wearing his favorite denim jacket.
He saw the paper in her hand and threw his hands up in immediate defense.
“She was so down about not having a dress for the dance,” Derek explained.
His voice pleaded for quick understanding.
“I just wanted to make her feel confident,” he added.
“It is not a big deal.”
Amber looked up at him.

Derek sighed heavily and shook his head.
