Sophie Said a Strange Man Had Been Inside the House — Then the Silver Ring and Muddy Footprints Proved She Had Been Telling the Truth
Chapter 1 — “Daddy… a Man Was Here”
Little Sophie sat crying in her bedroom, clutching her teddy bear tightly against her chest.
Vanessa stood several feet away with her arms folded.
“Sit there quietly.”
Sophie shook her head.
“But Mommy—”
“Stop making up stories.”
Sophie pointed toward the hallway again.
“He went that way.”
Vanessa sighed.
“Nobody went anywhere.”
“A man was here.”
“Sophie.”
The little girl’s face crumpled.
Then the front door opened downstairs.
“Vanessa?”
Sophie’s eyes widened.
“Daddy!”
She jumped from the bed and ran.
Daniel had barely stepped into the hallway when Sophie rushed toward him.
He immediately crouched.
“Hey. What’s wrong?”
She threw both arms around his neck.
“Daddy… a man was here.”
Vanessa appeared behind her.
“Nobody was here.”
Daniel looked from his wife to his daughter.
“What happened?”
Vanessa answered first.
“She says some man came inside.”
“I’ve been home all afternoon.”
“Nobody knocked.”
“Nobody rang the bell.”
“I think she saw someone outside and turned it into a whole story.”
Sophie shook her head desperately.
“No.”
Daniel rubbed her back.
“Okay.”
Then he looked directly at her.
“Tell me what you saw.”
Vanessa started to interrupt.
Daniel raised one hand.
“Let her tell me.”
Sophie swallowed.
“He had a green jacket.”
“Okay.”
“And a black box.”
“A box?”
She moved her hands apart.
“Like Daddy tools.”
A toolbox.
Daniel frowned.
“What did he do?”
“He came from the little door.”
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
“Side entrance?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“That door is locked.”
Sophie continued.
“He said hello.”
“Then he asked where the water room is.”
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
The utility closet.
“What did you tell him?”
“I said Mommy is upstairs.”
“Then what?”
“He got scared.”
Vanessa sighed.
“Daniel, please.”
Sophie suddenly reached into the pocket of her dress.
“He dropped this.”
She placed something into Daniel’s hand.
A silver ring.
Vanessa’s expression changed instantly.
Daniel examined it.
It was a thick silver wedding band.
There were small scratches along one edge.
Inside was an engraving:
M.L. — ALWAYS HOME.
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
“This isn’t yours.”
“No.”
“And it isn’t mine.”
Vanessa stared at the ring.
“Where did she get that?”
Sophie answered immediately.
“Hallway.”
Daniel stood.
He walked toward the side entrance.
Then stopped.
Across the wooden floor were several dark marks.
Fresh muddy footprints.
They began beside the side door.
Continued down the hallway.
Then disappeared around the corner toward the utility room.
Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“You told me nobody came inside.”
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“I didn’t know.”
Sophie clutched Daniel’s leg.
“I told Mommy.”
Daniel looked down at her.
“I know.”
Then he looked toward the muddy trail.
Someone really had been inside their house.
And nobody yet knew how he had entered.
