Chapter 5 — Richard Vale Knows the Story
Richard entered the archive ten minutes later.
He wore a dark blazer with the Hawthorne crest.
His eyes immediately went to the membership card in Oliver’s hand.
“Where did you get that?”
Oliver frowned.
“Everybody keeps asking me that.”
Arthur almost smiled.
“Answer his question instead, Richard.”
Richard looked at him.
“What question?”
“Where is Box 14?”
Richard folded his arms.
“The records were being reviewed.”
“By who?”
“Me.”
“Why?”
Richard glanced at Oliver.
“This isn’t a conversation for a child.”
Oliver immediately replied:
“It’s my grandfather’s conversation.”
Arthur nodded approvingly.
Richard’s expression tightened.
Finally, he explained.
Six months earlier, Hawthorne began negotiating with a developer.
The club wanted to build luxury cottages along the western edge of the course.
Before construction could begin, lawyers conducted a title review.
They found an old reference to the Bennett family.
“What reference?” Elaine asked.
Richard hesitated.
“A restriction.”
Arthur leaned closer.
“What restriction?”
Richard looked toward Oliver.
“Part of Samuel’s land was transferred on the condition that it remain recreational open space.”
Elaine stared at him.
“Then we can’t build cottages there.”
“That’s being disputed.”
“By you?” Arthur asked.
Richard did not answer.
Oliver looked at Samuel’s letter.
“Grandpa knew.”
Arthur nodded.
“Apparently he knew all along.”
Then Richard made a mistake.
He said:
“Samuel accepted money to release that condition.”
Arthur stared at him.
“According to what document?”
Richard went silent.
Arthur understood immediately.
“The one inside Box 14?”
