Another child was still missing.

Thomas heard someone screaming her name from the riverbank.
Walter begged him not to go.

Thomas handed Walter his whistle.

“Keep Ryan up high.”
Those were the last words Walter ever heard him speak.
Thomas entered the river again.
Rescue crews later found Rebecca alive after she had caught onto a fallen branch farther downstream.
Thomas never returned.
His body was recovered two days later.
Ryan stared at the clipping.
“Then everyone knew he saved me.”

Walter nodded.
“I could have.”

He told a rescue captain that Thomas reached Ryan first.
He told one reporter.
But the published story barely changed.
Then the town announced Walter would receive a bravery award.
That was when Walter had another chance.

Ryan stared at him.
