Chapter 9 — The Letter Gerald Never Sent
The archived file contained dozens of documents.
Most matched copies the family already possessed.
Then the attorney found a sealed draft letter.
It was addressed to Richard.
But there was no evidence it had ever been mailed.
Gerald had written it five years after Ben left.
The opening line read:
Richard, I have carried something long enough.
Gerald admitted that Stephen had pressured him to complete the property transfer quickly.
Gerald believed Stephen would eventually obtain control anyway because he had custody.
So he allowed an assistant to process documents before all required signatures were obtained.
Then Stephen returned the forms appearing to contain Richard and Margaret’s signatures.
Gerald suspected they were false.
He processed them anyway.
Years later, guilt caught up with him.
He drafted the confession.
But never sent it.
Claire looked at her parents.
“So you weren’t involved.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
Margaret started crying.
“And Ben spent all these years thinking maybe we let it happen.”
Matthew looked devastated.
“I made that worse.”
He had warned Ben there might be evidence against Margaret before asking whether the evidence was genuine.
Claire looked at him.
“Then you fix that part.”
Matthew called Ben.
For the first time, he told the entire truth.
He apologized.
Then Richard took the phone.
“Ben?”
There was silence.
Richard’s voice shook.
“Son, we never signed that paper.”
Margaret began crying harder at the word son.
Richard continued:
“And if you’ll still come, there’s a seat waiting for you tomorrow.”
