Knowing more of the tragedy that has characterised her early life and childhood, Michaela Bangura was born on the 6th January, 1995 in Sierra Leone. In the time of Sierra Leone Civil War, both her parents died and she was left in an orphanage. Mabinty was the pre-school name given to Michaela, who was an outcast in the orphanage due to skin disease –vitiligo which makes patches of skin become white. Her caregivers and other children in her care referred to her as ‘unlucky’ thus denying her some basic rights to interact with other children.

Michaela’s family has kept much of her personal life out of the public eye, however her sister Mia DePrince wrote a beautiful message on Michaela’s passing encouraging people to Remember her as the little girl she was. “As far as we can go back in our story to that little African orphanage where we slept on a mat…; Michaela (Mabinty) and I always performed our own musical theatre plays and created our own ballets… She was an inspiration. ”
